TOURISMO project partner Fundacion Valenciaport is testing new ways to make local tourism work better —for visitors, for the city, and for everyone in between.
With thousands of cruise passengers arriving every week at the Port of Valencia, knowing where people go and when they move is key to keeping experiences smooth and the city welcoming. Fundación Valenciaport are testing smart optical camera technologies that help us gather insights while respecting individual privacy. The idea is simple: better information, better decisions.
Here’s what’s being tested on site:
- Counting people crossing a point: A virtual line is set on the video feed—imagine a digital doorway—so we can track exactly how many people exit a building or pass through a cruise gate.
- Monitoring busy areas: Virtual zones are drawn within the camera’s field of view. They allow us to see, in real time, how full a queue is getting or whether a square is becoming too crowded.
- Protecting privacy: Every solution under review must fully comply with GDPR, using features like face blurring and full-body pixelation to ensure personal privacy is never compromised.

In practice, this means that port managers and city planners get real-time insights that help them prevent bottlenecks, ease foot traffic, and keep spaces comfortable without needing guesswork or heavy-handed controls. It’s a smarter, more respectful way of managing tourism, built on real needs and real data.
By trying out these solutions now, Valencia isn’t just solving today’s challenges —it’s building a future where technology quietly works in the background to support vibrant, people-centered tourism.
